FORCE TOUCH

OPERATIONAL SAFETY AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL

A touchscreen reaches its limits when a simple tap is no longer enough. In demanding industrial applications – such as machinery, vehicles, or medical devices – inputs must be precise, unambiguous, and error-free. This is exactly where RAFI’s Force Touch comes in.

FORCE DETECTION AS A TOOL

Force Touch adds a crucial new dimension to conventional capacitive touch input: force detection. Integrated pressure sensors use displacement measurement to determine not only whether a surface is being touched but also how much force the user is applying. An input is accepted only when both the touch signal and the pressure exceed defined thresholds.

The result is significantly greater operational reliability and a clear distinction between intentional inputs and unintentional touches, such as those caused by gloves, water droplets, or accidental contact.

ONE OPERATING ELEMENT – MULTIPLE FUNCTIONS

Force Touch also opens up new design possibilities for user interfaces. Depending on the pressure level applied, a single operating element can be used to perform multiple functions. This reduces the number of input elements required, simplifies the UI design, and noticeably improves the clarity of the user interface.

Another key advantage: Force Touch is completely moisture-resistant. Even in wet conditions or when used with gloves, the system works reliably – and without false triggers.

FORCE TOUCH also provides the necessary signal basis for redundant systems, in which inputs must be safeguarded through multiple independent channels. The switching thresholds can be flexibly configured and optimally adapted to the specific application using software.

FORCE TOUCH

Advantages at a glance

+ Reliably distinguishing between touching and pressing
Force Touch detects both the touch and the pressure applied, and only accepts an input if both parameters match, which reliably prevents false triggers.

+ Multiple functions on a single operating element
Pressure-sensitive input levels (light, moderate, strong) allow different actions to be triggered on a single surface. This saves space, simplifies the user interface, and creates intuitive user experiences.

+ The basis for realistic haptic feedback and redundancy
Precise pressure detection is a precondition for realistic haptic feedback and also enables the development of redundant, safety-critical input systems.

+ Moisture resistance
The system is resistant to moisture and humidity – a significant advantage in environments such as food processing and mechanical engineering, and when used outdoors.

+ Flexible configuration
Switching thresholds and input levels can be adjusted by software and adapted to different application scenarios without requiring any hardware changes.
